Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is a mental health disorder characterized by an enduring pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity. Affecting the child’s performance at school and their relationship with friends and family, the condition is generally caused due to factors such as genetics, drug or alcohol abuse during pregnancy, low birth weight and brain injuries.
A child with ADHD can manifest any or all of the following three symptoms:
- Inattentiveness: It is marked by a short attention span, being easily distracted, making careless mistakes, losing things, constantly changing activity on in attempting and delaying tasks.
- Hyperactivity: Hyperactive kids fiddle a lot, frequently leave their seats to walk around, run or climb when inappropriate, talk excessively and have difficulty in doing any activity peacefully.
- Impulsivity: An impulsive child is impatient and finds it difficult to wait for his/her turn, answers before someone finishes the question, interrupts frequently and starts talking when not required.
ADHD is a treatable illness with the help of medications, psychotherapy or a combination of both. If your child is suffering from any of the symptoms, get him/her checked today.
