Aromatherapy may help treat depression

Depression today affects more than 300 million people all over the world, highlights the World Health Organization (WHO). As the leading cause of global disability, it affects women more than men. Women may become sad and hopeless while men tend to become aggressive, irritable and angry. Men are also less likely to share their problems and seek treatment. But, an untreated depressive condition can lead to a multitude of other problems and complications, such as sleep and eating disorders, stroke, suicide ideation and death.

While the efficacy of most common forms of treatment, such as antidepressants, counseling and cognitive therapy is undoubted, aromatherapy is one of the lesser explored depression treatment options. The therapy makes use of organic compounds or natural oils to improve mood, stimulate brain function and boost mental state. The oils are extracted from flowers, roots, bark or stem of a tree or a plant. One can apply them on skin, spray them in the air or mix in water during bath to relieve stress.

Some of the essential oils that can be effective in treating depression are:

  • Jasmine
  • Sandalwood
  • Basil
  • Rose
  • Lavender
  • Bergamot
  • Geranium
  • Neroli
  • Petitgrain
  • Chamomile
  • Ylang-ylang
  • Clary sage

While these pure essential oils may help in relieving symptoms of depression, they should always be used in conjunction with the conventional treatment course. One must take help of a mental health expert who can customize the treatment as per the patient’s needs based on effective outcomes. The hope lies in the fact that depression is a treatable condition and one can lead a normal life after recovery.
